This is my first time to write a contribution to our blog. As the use of TyeDee Bin has grown, I thought it would be good to let our website users know about the story of TyeDee Bin. When TyeDee Bin was first created in 1988 by Gravenhurst, ON businessman Alex Briggs, he had two objectives in mind, one was to keep bears out of people's garbage, the other was to make a container that was suitable for use by both the home owner and the waste collector. Alex knew that as a well built steel waste container that TyeDee Bin would be more expensive than most property owners were accustomed to spending, so he had to make sure that it had the value the justify that kind of an investment. In 1988 he sold about 1/2 a dozen TyeDee Bins from his Bay St. address in Gravenhurst, and the sales increased from there. Clearly, he did show the value in his design as in the next 16 years he had sold over 1,000 TyeDee Bins to home and cottage owners around Muskoka and Central Ontario, with not much more of a marketing campaign than displaying TyeDee Bin in his driveway, having his phone number on the TyeDee Bin label, and the tried and true "Word of Mouth" referal. Almost all of the bins that have been sold in the over 20 years since are still in service, and are meeting their two objectives: They are very effective at keeping bears and other nuisance wildlife out of people's garbage, and they are safe and easy to work with for both the home owner and the waste collector. In the days and weeks ahead, I will keep adding more contributions to the blog, to provide useful information about bear and wildlife safety, about TyeDee Bin's growth, new retail locations and interesting TyeDee Bin uses and users, and upcoming events. I hope you find these contributions interesting and informative. If you have any comments about the blog, bear or wildlife safety, or about TyeDee Bin, please feel free to contact me by e-mail.
